How to It Ends With Us represents Ryle’s abuse?

The movie’s handling of domestic violence is a big departure from the books, even having different scenes altogether. In the novel, when Ryle burns his hand, he doesn’t push Lily until he tries to cool it under the sink – whereas in the movie, it happens after he touches a hot surface.

During that scene in the book, Lily is also supposed to be uncontrollably laughing from a drunken state (until Ryle turns violent). “Goddammit, Lily,” Ryle tells her in the book. “It’s not funny. This hand is my king’s career. ”

And after he pushed Lily down the stairs in the book, he kicked Ryle out of the apartment-leaving him to sleep in the hallway all night.

The conversation around abuse also plays out differently in the film. For starters, Ryle did not learn about Lily’s family history of domestic violence until after they had been dating while in the movie but in the book, it happened on the first night they met.

A new addition to the film is a delightful conversation between Lily and her sister Allyssa (Jenny Slate) after he found out about Ryle’s abusive behavior and told Lily about Ryle accidentally shooting his brother as a child. In the book, Ryle is the one who explains to Lily how her brother died, and Allyssa never tells Lily that she shouldn’t take Ryle back because of his abusive behavior.
