Okocha and Kanu praise Lookman’s dedication after CAF Award win

Ademola Lookman’s victory at the 2024 CAF Footballer of the Year awards earned him high praise from two of Nigeria’s greatest football legends, Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu. The striker from Atalanta, who had a remarkable year with both his club and the Nigerian national team, was chosen as the best player in Africa at the ceremony held in Marrakech, Morocco.

Lookman beat tough competition from stars such as PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Brighton’s Simon Adingra and Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy to claim the prestigious award. The award follows an impressive year in which Lookman played a key role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League victory and helped Nigeria finish second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking on Soccer TV’s YouTube channel, Okocha emphasized that Lookman’s character was an important factor in his success. “The CAF Award is not just about how well you play on the field,” he said. “Your demeanor on the field, your interactions with players and your reactions to coaches are all tested before we talk about tactical performances.”

Known for his skillful play, Okocha called Lookman “an example of good sportsmanship and a consummate gentleman.” “Ademola Lookman being awarded Africa’s Best Player of the Year means that he has been examined against all these criteria and passed.”

Kanu, the two-time African Player of the Year, also praised Lookman’s determination. “Your dedication and commitment to both the national and club sides has earned you this success,” Kanu said in his message to Lookman. “I’m personally proud of you. “This award will inspire the younger generation to strive and not be discouraged in the face of difficulties.”

Lookman’s performances in 2023 and 2024 were remarkable. From his hat-trick in the Europa League final to his goals for Nigeria at the AFCON, Lookman has proven himself to be one of Africa’s brightest talents.
