Keegan-Michael Key Nods To ‘Key & Peele’ Sketch In Football Coverage

Almost a decade after that Comedy Central event over, Keegan-Michael Key referenced the classic sketch as he appeared in TNTPEOPLE College Playoff Kickoff Show during Saturday’s game between SMU and Penn State.

Roundtable event presented two of the most interesting names in college football, tribute to Lock & Peel sketch’East/West College Bowl‘, asked Key to weigh in on the monikers Moh Bility (Rice University cornerback) and General Booty (UL Monroe quarterback).

“In these two, only because of the cleverness of Moh Bility’s name,” he said with a smile. “I like the ‘H’ too, mix it up a bit.”

Key added, “First of all, if you’re going to name your kid General, he better be. There’s no choice.”

They threw one last wild card in, making up the name D’Neckshaw Trapezius, which was jokingly displayed by the player against the ‘East / West College Bowl’ chart.

In the sketch, Key and co-star Jordan Peele in turn impersonating a series of fictional athletes, introducing themselves in the style of ESPN promos with increasingly strange names, such as D’Squarius Green Jr., Xmus Jaxon Flaxon-Waxon and (The Player Formerly Known As Mousecop).

After the duo first appeared together on Fox’s TV food in 2004, they landed their own self-titled show on Comedy Central, which ran for five seasons from 2012 to 2015. The series earned them an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2016.
