3 Things We Got Wrong about the 2024 Vikings

Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings remain in the top 6 of the league’s Super Bowl standings; It’s a strange but good kind of ordeal after sportsbooks picked the purple team to win six or seven games in early September.

In the offseason, this website was full of bold predictions and predictions; a few of them were terrible. These were the three main things we got wrong about the 2024 Vikings.

1. Ty Chandler’s Appearance

The only issue RB1 Aaron Jones faced heading into the 2024 regular season was his injury history. For the most part, Jones stayed healthy and put up 1,500 yards from scrimmage.

Frankly, we thought he would miss 4-6 games, handing the RB1 baton to Chandler.

Instead, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah traded Cam Akers and demoted Chandler to RB3.

Chandler still has one season left on his rookie contract (2025), but this time we got it wrong. Jones was uninjured, Akers rejoined the club as RB2, and Chandler’s role was reduced.

2. Sam Darnold Throws Nearly 25 TDs – Total

We’ve participated in a “Baker Mayfield breeding season” for Darnold — but not to the Pro Bowler’s tune. Darnold is posting Pro Bowl numbers and that’s not up for debate.

Minnesota’s offensive infrastructure always seemed to suit Darnold, and indeed everyone else. He’s been skewering the MVP conversation for most of the season, and his team is 12-2.

What we expected from Darnold was a more mediocre and worse game than he showed. The man went out.

3. Vikings Would Finish 7-10

Sportsbooks believed Minnesota would finish 2024 with a 6-11 or 7-10 record. We disagreed.

We thought the Vikings would have a 6-6 record around Thanksgiving and then run out of gas, mainly because the Darnold issue was so front and center.

But that was wrong by a mile.

The Vikings will visit the postseason, and if they play their cards right in the next three weeks, they might even get a Round 1 bye.

That’s why Kevin O’Connell is the league’s leading Coach of the Year award winner.
