Gareth Southgate reveals he decided to resign as England boss BEFORE the end of Euro 2024 and opens up on which song he had on repeat after realising it was ‘time for change’

Gareth Southgate has announced that he has decided to step down as England manager before the end of Euro 2024, despite leading the Three Lions to the final.

Southgate resigned just two days after Spain’s bitter 2-1 defeat, leaving him out of a job after being linked with a number of clubs including Manchester United.

Appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the 54-year-old opened up about his emotional departure and insisted it was “time for change all around”.

She also chose Adele’s “Someone Like You” as one of the eight songs she would take with her if she were stranded on a desert island, saying that the hit was played over and over again during the tournament in Germany because “I knew I was going to be left.”

Speaking about the track, Southgate said: ‘There were so many words in it that, even if I heard it today, it relates to my relationship with England.’

The ballad is written from the perspective of a woman who describes the end of a long relationship after believing she would marry her ex-partner.

“They’ve got to move on and you wish them the best and there are regrets, but there were also memories actually made,” Southgate added.

Southgate also selected Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, featuring Stormzy, and The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys as part of his eight-song collection.

Southgate, whose next steps remain a mystery, has revealed he is open to a ‘completely different’ career path and has even suggested taking a step outside of coaching.

‘When you’re a coach and have one of the biggest jobs, how do you follow through?’ he told host Lauren Laverne on Sunday’s episode.

Southgate led England to back-to-back European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024, becoming the first Three Lions manager in history to do so.

England also reached their first major tournament final since 1996 at Euro 2020 under Southgate, who played 57 times internationally during his football career.

Five years after being awarded the OBE, he is now set to be knighted in the New Year’s Honors List for his work with the national team.

In October, it was reported that the decision should be approved.

However, once the green light was given, it became clear that the letters had already been sent by the Honor Committee, according to The Sun.
