Florida driver hits student with her truck, covers license plate before fleeing, deputies say

Sarah Wright, 37, was arrested Thursday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and driving with a revoked license.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. at the intersection of Gage Boulevard and Noah Street in Deltona, Florida.

The sheriff’s office said the victim, a 16-year-old boy, was riding his scooter home from Pine Ridge High School when he was struck by a black Chevrolet Silverado while using a crosswalk.

The teenager fell to the ground, causing a serious injury to the back of his head and an arm injury, but he remained alert and conscious after the incident.

An eyewitness reported that he was checking a nearby mailbox when he heard the crash. He told investigators that the suspect, later identified as Wright, got out of his truck after the crash and checked on the child before returning to his vehicle and covering his license plate with paper and tape.

However, the witness still managed to see the first character of the tag. The neighborhood’s Ring camera also recorded the truck fleeing the scene.

The victim and witness were also able to give a detailed description of the suspect.

Authorities were then able to locate the suspect vehicle within minutes, which was recorded on a nearby License Plate Reader camera.

Wright was located in Flagler County and taken into custody with the assistance of the Florida Highway Patrol and police. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
