South Carolina defeats Iowa for the National Championship Title

The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated Iowa for the 2024 National Championship title. South Carolina finishes its undefeated season with a 38-0 record, but more importantly, a National Championship. Coach Dawn Staley is proving to be one of the greatest college coaches in history after becoming the first Black coach, male or female, to win three national championships. Coach Staley becomes the fifth female coach to win three national championships, joining Geno Auriemma, Pat Summit, Tara VanDerveer and Kim Mulkey. Not bad for the Philadelphia native, who had a stellar WNBA career before her stint as a college coach. What made this run special was that even though South Carolina did not return a single starter from last year’s team, key players had stepped into emerging roles. Freshman standouts Tessa Johnson and Milaysia Fulwiley embraced the big stage throughout the NCAA tournament. Additional leadership from Kamila Cardoso and Raven Johnson has benefited the Gamecocks this season.

South Carolina surpasses Caitlin Clark’s firepower

In Sunday’s match, South Carolina took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, while Caitin Clark scored 18 of her 30 points in Q. The Gamecocks made an adjustment on defense, placing Raven Johnson ahead of Caitlin Clark. After getting denied from behind by Clark in last year’s final four matchup, it’s safe to say Raven Johnson is taking this matchup personally. Johnson’s linebacker, Caitlin Clark, scored just 12 points in three quarters.
